This February half term, we did something truly special and took the children on their very first ski holiday to Myrkdalen in Norway.

It proved to be the perfect place to begin their skiing journey.

Why Myrkdalen is Ideal for First-Time Skiers

If you have ever considered a family ski holiday but felt concerned about busy slopes, long lift queues or the usual half-term crowds, Norway offers a refreshing alternative.

Skiing in Myrkdalen felt calm, spacious and incredibly relaxed. The difference was noticeable from the moment we arrived. There was no rushing, no waiting around for lifts, and no crowded pistes.

The slopes are wide and forgiving, with plenty of gentle runs that are ideal for beginners. This gave the children the space to learn at their own pace, practise their turns and build confidence without feeling overwhelmed.

It felt like skiing as it should be, fun, supportive and completely stress-free.

Building Confidence on the Slopes

One of the highlights of the trip was seeing how quickly the children progressed. The quiet, open slopes meant they were not worrying about other skiers and could focus purely on learning.

Norway is an excellent destination for first-time skiers because the environment naturally encourages confidence. By the end of the trip, they were skiing happily and already asking when we could return.

More Than Just a Ski Holiday

What really sets Norway apart is that it offers so much more than skiing. It felt like a complete winter adventure.

During our stay, we enjoyed a range of memorable experiences:

Husky sledding

We took a husky sled ride through the snowy landscape, which felt like stepping into a winter storybook. It was a truly unforgettable experience for the whole family.

Mountain sledging

One evening, we took the lift up the mountain and sledged back down at sunset. It was great fun and quickly became a favourite moment of the trip.

Night skiing

Skiing under the lights added a completely different atmosphere and made the experience even more memorable.

A Scenic Norwegian Experience

Our lift pass also included access to the famous Flåm Railway and a fjord cruise.

The railway journey alone is remarkable, with dramatic scenery, waterfalls and mountain views throughout. Combined with the fjord cruise, it added another dimension to the holiday and made it feel like a full Norwegian experience rather than just a ski trip.

Dining and Accommodation

We stayed on a half board basis, and the quality of the food throughout our stay was excellent. It was the perfect way to relax after a day on the slopes, with a great choice of meals for both adults and children.

Would We Recommend It?

Absolutely.

If you are planning a first family ski holiday and are looking for:

  • Quiet, uncrowded slopes
  • Wide, beginner-friendly runs
  • Minimal lift queues
  • Unique winter experiences
  • Something a little different from the traditional Alpine resorts

Then Myrkdalen should be firmly on your list.

For us, it was the ideal introduction to skiing, relaxed, memorable and confidence-building from start to finish.

We are already planning to return next year.
