My First River Cruise Experience & CLIA River View Conference in Amsterdam

Over the past six months, I’ve had the opportunity to expand my river cruise knowledge through the River Cruise Academy. While the training gave me a strong foundation, it was my first river cruise along Portugal’s Douro Valley and the CLIA River View Conference in Amsterdam that really brought everything to life.

My First River Cruise on the Douro

My journey began with a four-night sailing along Portugal’s River Douro onboard Emerald Radiance.

Purpose-built for the Douro, the ship carries just over 100 guests, giving it a relaxed, intimate feel from the moment you step onboard. I still remember walking onto the sun deck on the first morning, with vineyards stretching endlessly along the hills. It immediately felt different to any holiday I’d taken before.

It was also my first time in Portugal, and it exceeded expectations. The Douro Valley is known for its rolling vineyards, historic towns and ever-changing scenery. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it’s steeped in history and famous for its wine production, particularly Port.

Immersive Destinations & Culture

One of the highlights was visiting Salamanca in Spain, often called the “Golden City” thanks to its honey-coloured sandstone buildings. The city’s architecture and atmosphere really stood out, but what made it memorable was an authentic “Tuna” music performance by local students. It felt like a genuine connection to the destination, which is exactly what river cruising does so well.

Life Onboard

What stood out most was the pace. Life onboard felt unhurried and comfortable, giving you time to properly enjoy both the ship and the destinations.

The crew, many of them local, brought real insight and pride to the experience. Dining was another highlight, with locally sourced ingredients, regional wines and cheeses, all enjoyed against a backdrop of panoramic river views. It’s a relaxed but refined way to travel that’s easy to settle into.

From the Douro to Amsterdam

After the calm of the Douro, the next part of my River Academy journey was a complete contrast. I travelled to Amsterdam to attend the CLIA River View Conference, one of the key events in the river cruise industry calendar.

The conference brought together leading cruise lines and travel professionals, offering insight into the latest trends and developments in river cruising. It was also great to hear from guest speakers, including Susan Calman, who brought a fresh perspective to the event.

It felt like a natural next step after my training, building on what I’d learned with real industry insight.

Stepping Onboard the Ships

One of the most valuable parts of the conference was the chance to experience multiple ships first-hand.

I stayed overnight on Emerald Luna and Riviera’s MS Geoffrey Chaucer, which gave me a clear understanding of the onboard experience, from cabins and dining to overall atmosphere. Alongside this, I toured nine ships across three days, each offering something slightly different in style, layout and guest experience.

This kind of hands-on experience makes a real difference when recommending the right cruise.

River cruising isn’t one-size-fits-all. Each cruise line offers something different, whether that’s ultra-luxury, relaxed exploration or something more culturally focused.

Being able to experience ships and speak directly with cruise lines means I can offer informed, tailored recommendations rather than relying on brochures alone.

Planning a river cruise involves a lot of choice, from destinations and ships to cabins and excursions. Having first-hand experience makes navigating those choices much easier.
