Day 1: Arrival & All Aboard!
After a short and sweet transfer from the airport, we were whisked onboard MS Trollfjord. I was quickly settled into my Arctic Superior Outside Cabin, where I discovered a heated bathroom floor (yes please!), lots of storage, a kettle and the comfiest bed and pillows I think I’ve ever sunk into.
A quick wander around the ship showcased its beautiful Nordic design, warm smiles from staff, and overall relaxed vibe. This evening I ate dinner at Flora, the main dining room, which serves up delicious local dishes that are freshly sourced and quintessentially Norwegian.
Exploring Norway, One Magical Stop at a Time
Hurtigruten have created voyages with a fantastic blend of relaxation, exploration and education. While we were sailing, I joined in on lectures by the Coastal Experience Team, did a bit of craft and photography, and popped into the fitness room and sauna. Despite being small in size, it still felt like there was plenty to do while we weren’t exploring and Norway is so picturesque – even just standing on the top deck or looking out of the window was entertaining enough.
Honningsvåg: The North Cape
We nearly missed this due to an avalanche (yes, really!), but the road was cleared just in time. Standing at the northernmost point of Europe was surreal. We had the chance to explore the museum, the shops and spot the iconic globe monument. Then, to top it all off, we spotted some whales splashing through the icy waters which is something I will never forget.
Alta: The Ice Hotel
This was a truly bucket-list experience and I’m afraid the pictures just don’t quite do it justice when it comes to how amazing it was. Every year it’s rebuilt with a new theme – ours was Greek Mythology. We had the pleasure of viewing intricate ice sculptures, glowing light displays and sampling vodka in an ice glass. It was absolutely brilliant!
Kristiansund: The Atlantic Road
James Bond fans, listen up – “No Time to Die” was filmed here! We cruised along this rollercoaster-like stretch of road connecting islets with wild bridges over 8km. Windy, dramatic, unforgettable. Topped off with pancakes and tea in a cosy harbour café. Making for a very blissful introduction to Kristiansund indeed.
Lødingen: Steamship Wharf
Snowflakes danced down as we stepped off the ship for a walk to this historical wharf. We heard stories of Hurtigruten’s origins, listened to traditional Sámi music, and tucked into coffee and scrumptious cake. I embraced the Norwegian history entangled in Lødingen’s rugged coastline and picked up a Viking figurine that proudly sat in my cabin window the rest of the trip.
Foodie Moments
There are three onboard restaurants:
Flora: My go-to. Perfect for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Brasserie Arran: Cosy, traditionally Norwegian (book ahead).
Røst: Fine dining elegance. There’s a supplement unless you’re in a suite, but so worth it.
With all-inclusive drinks, you can sip something special while watching the world drift by.
The Main Event: The Northern Lights
Yes, they came out to play – not once, but TWICE! At 2am and 3am, no less. You can opt in for in-cabin announcements if the aurora makes an appearance. I did for two nights before deciding sleep was important too… maybe. Of course, seeing one of the world’s most famed and spectacular natural wonders in person was just the absolute highlight of the trip for me.
Final Thoughts
After 6 unforgettable nights aboard MS Trollfjord, I felt I had a truly immersive Arctic experience. The smaller ship size made everything feel more personal, and the staff? Absolutely lovely. Every day on board felt like a gift. With Hurtigruten’s slower-paced style, there’s no rush, just time to truly soak it all in.
