First Stop – Vibrant Vancouver
Our adventure kicked off in style with a whirlwind two-day stay in the stunning city of Vancouver – and what a way to begin! This familiarisation trip with Newmarket Holidays wasn’t just about sightseeing – it was about forging new friendships, sharing stories, and soaking up as much first-hand experience as possible so I can help you plan a holiday to remember.
Vancouver greeted us with its unique blend of urban buzz and natural beauty. We took in the highlights on a city bus tour, stopping off at the bustling Granville Island, famous for its artisan markets, delicious local bites, and quirky street performers. Then it was off to Stanley Park – a peaceful green oasis right in the city’s heart.
One of the real standouts was dinner at the Vancouver Lookout, where 360-degree panoramic views created the perfect backdrop. But the next day took things up a notch – we braved the thrilling Capilano Suspension Bridge, swaying high above a dramatic rainforest and canyon. It’s a proper heart-racing moment, but the views were absolutely worth it!
Next Up – Cruising with Holland America
All aboard the elegant Koningsdam! This Holland America ship became our floating home as we cruised into the rugged beauty of Alaska. The sailing itself turned into an unexpected wildlife adventure – and what a treat! We saw humpback whales, dolphins, sea lions, and even caught a fleeting glimpse of an orca. The onboard wildlife talks were a brilliant way to learn more about what we were seeing – so informative and genuinely fascinating.
Our first Alaskan port was Juneau, surrounded by towering peaks and icy waters. We took a scenic journey through Tracy Arm Inlet, a landscape of cascading waterfalls and the majestic Twin Sawyer Glaciers. Later, we visited the awe-inspiring Mendenhall Glacier, where the roaring Nugget Falls (a 115-metre-high waterfall!) left us speechless.
Charming Towns & Unforgettable Experiences
In Skagway, we stepped into a living postcard. This character-filled town is rich in Gold Rush history and packed with charm. A visit to a husky farm was a definite highlight – cuddling adorable puppies and watching a thrilling sled demonstration. We even had a go at panning for gold ourselves!
And if that wasn’t enough, we popped into two brilliantly preserved saloons – one with an old-school cowboy vibe and the other completely bonkers in the best way. Exploring these towns really brought Alaska’s wild and wonderful past to life.
Glacier Bay & Ketchikan Wonders
Glacier Bay was an absolute showstopper. I wasn’t prepared for the vivid blues of the glaciers – from pale turquoise to deep, inky shades. It was pure magic.
Our final port was Ketchikan, where we delved into the cultural side of Alaska with a guided tour of a Totem Pole park. We learnt about the meanings behind the carvings and the traditions of the indigenous communities. Later, we had a giggle at the lumberjack show – a bit cheesy, yes, but heaps of fun!
Final Thoughts
This trip really was something special. It gave me a real insight into what it’s like to cruise in colder climates, and I came away with so much knowledge to share – not just about Alaska, but about how people travel and what makes each trip unique.
