Join us as we continue our two-week New Zealand road trip, travelling from the South Island’s stunning coastline to the cultural heart of the North Island. From wildlife encounters in Kaikoura to Māori traditions in Rotorua and sky-high views in Auckland, this week delivered unforgettable moments.

Day 9: Seals, Coastal Walks and the Ferry to the North Island

We started our day in Kaikoura with a coastal walk to the fur seal colony – and within minutes, we spotted our first seal lounging on the rocks. The walk itself was peaceful and scenic, with wildflowers and birds along the way. Further on, we encountered dozens more seals, including pups, basking in the sun and playing in the shallows.

Determined not to return the same way, we found a path leading up the cliff and walked the headland back – an incredible view over the Pacific Ocean and a satisfying end to our three-hour morning hike.

After a light lunch, we set off north, stopping briefly in Blenheim before arriving in the quaint harbour town of Picton. As we wandered around the bay, we were lucky enough to spot stingrays swimming beneath the bridge – an unexpected highlight.

We boarded the Interislander ferry for our three-hour crossing from Picton to Wellington. The views as we left the South Island were spectacular, and we watched the sun set behind the mountains as we approached New Zealand’s capital. The journey was smooth, and after disembarking, we made our way to our hotel for a well-earned rest.

Day 10: From Wellington to Napier via Greytown and Pūkaha Wildlife Centre

Although we didn’t have much time to explore Wellington, we saw enough to know we want to return. After spotting the Royal Princess cruise ship in port, we set off through the winding mountain roads towards Greytown – a charming, boutique-style village where we enjoyed brunch and tea served in vintage china cups.

Next stop was the Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre – a sanctuary dedicated to conserving native bird species. We saw a variety of rare and endangered birds, including the North Island Kākā, blue ducks, and even a kiwi in the nocturnal house. It was an educational and inspiring visit, and well worth the entry fee.

Back on the road, we made our way through vineyard-dotted hills to Napier. Arriving just as a storm rolled in, we checked into the Scenic Te Pania Hotel. Dinner in the hotel restaurant was excellent – the beef fillet paired with a local Merlot-Cabernet blend was a real treat. After a long but fulfilling day, we settled in for the night.

Day 11: Exploring Napier and Driving to Rotorua via Lake Taupo

We woke to rain and low cloud cover, but that didn’t stop us from heading into Napier’s Art Deco town centre. Despite the grey skies, the restored 1930s buildings and well-kept gardens offered plenty of charm. The town’s unique architecture, shaped by its post-earthquake rebuild, makes it a standout on the east coast.

Leaving Napier behind, we travelled through the Esk Valley wine region and on to Lake Taupo. As the skies cleared, we were greeted with magnificent views of the lake and surrounding mountains. We stopped for a walk along the lakefront and even took part in the famous Hole in One golf challenge – no winners, but plenty of laughs.

After another scenic drive, we arrived in Rotorua and checked into the Pullman Hotel. This geothermal town was noticeably lively, with the smell of sulphur in the air. We visited the Pig & Whistle Pub for dinner – hearty food, great drinks and a lively atmosphere to end the day.

Day 12: Hell’s Gate Geothermal Park and Māori Cultural Evening

Our morning began at Hell’s Gate Geothermal Park – one of Rotorua’s top attractions. We took a self-guided walk through steaming vents, bubbling mud pools, and hot waterfalls. It’s a fascinating place steeped in Māori mythology and healing traditions.

After the walk, we indulged in a mud bath, followed by a sulphur soak and plunge pool. A wonderfully relaxing experience that left us both feeling rejuvenated.

In the afternoon, we wandered through Rotorua’s Eat Street for a casual lunch before strolling around the Government Gardens and historic buildings. We ended our evening with a Māori cultural experience, complete with a traditional hāngi dinner, live performances, and the iconic haka. The glow worm walk through the forest was the perfect end to a magical day.

Day 13: Driving to the Coromandel Peninsula

We left Rotorua and made our way north to the peaceful town of Pauanui on the Coromandel Peninsula. En route, we had a short break in Tauranga, a bustling port city that wasn’t really our style, so we carried on through the lush green hills and forests.

Pauanui was the perfect contrast – a sleepy coastal town with golden sands and clear green waters. We checked into Pauanui Motor Lodge and went for a sunset walk along the beach before enjoying a relaxed dinner at our accommodation. A lovely, slow-paced evening to recharge after a few busy days.

Day 14: Final Drive to Auckland and Sky Tower Views

Our final full day on the road began with a drive to Auckland, where we returned our trusty rental car and checked into The Heritage Hotel. After navigating the city centre and dropping off our luggage, we headed out to explore.

Highlights of the day included a visit to Mount Smart Stadium (for Paul’s rugby league fix) and the Sky Tower. We braved the heights and took in panoramic views from 51 floors up – not easy if you don’t love heights, but absolutely worth it for the incredible perspective over Auckland.

We finished our evening with dinner by the harbour. The vibrant waterfront was lit up beautifully and full of life – the perfect place to reflect on the North Island leg of our trip.

Day 15: Flying Back to Christchurch for Family Time

After a wonderful stay in Auckland, we headed to the airport for a short domestic flight back to Christchurch. The flight was smooth and on time, and we were warmly welcomed by family for the next chapter of our trip – a week of home comforts, laughter, and relaxed days.

Dinner that evening was a homemade Vietnamese dish followed by our usual nightly card game. A great way to wind down after a fortnight of adventure.
