I recently joined a group of amazing travel agents on an unforgettable adventure through one of the most breathtaking regions of China with Wendy Wu Tours.
From ancient towns and mountain landscapes to high-speed trains and incredible local experiences, this six-day journey through Hunan Province was packed with memorable moments.
Day 1: Changsha to Zhangjiajie
Our adventure began in Changsha with a visit to Orange Isle, home to a striking 32-metre statue of a young Chairman Mao. We then stepped into history at Yuelu Academy, one of China’s oldest centres of learning.
After a four-hour coach journey, we arrived in Zhangjiajie and spent the evening exploring the spectacular 72 Qilou. Lit up after dark, this impressive complex made for a brilliant introduction to the region.
Day 2: Zhangjiajie National Forest Park
Today was all about the incredible scenery of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park.
We explored the Ten-Mile Gallery before riding the Bailong Glass Elevator, which climbs 326 metres up the side of a cliff in under two minutes.
At the top, we were rewarded with stunning views of the famous sandstone peaks that inspired the floating mountains in Avatar. Seeing them in person was every bit as impressive as I’d hoped. After taking in the views from Mihun Stage and Emperor Mountain, we returned by cable car.
Day 3: Baofeng Lake and Tianmen Mountain
The day began with a peaceful sampan cruise on Baofeng Lake, surrounded by waterfalls, forests and dramatic mountain scenery.
Later, we headed to Tianmen Mountain, where the challenge of the day awaited – climbing the famous 999 steps to Tianmen Cave, also known as Heaven’s Door.
It was certainly a workout, but the views at the top made every step worthwhile.
After all that exercise, some of us treated ourselves to a traditional Chinese massage, which felt very well deserved.
Day 4: Grand Canyon Adventures
Today brought a little more adrenaline.
We visited Zhangjiajie’s Grand Canyon, home to the famous glass-bottom bridge spanning 430 metres across the gorge. For an extra thrill, I took the opportunity to zipline across the canyon – an exhilarating experience and one of my personal highlights of the trip.
We also explored Huanglong Cave, an enormous underground world filled with colourful rock formations and waterfalls.
Day 5: Furong Ancient Town
After several busy days, we slowed the pace with a visit to Furong Ancient Town.
Built on cliffs beside a waterfall, this historic town is full of traditional wooden houses, narrow streets and local shops. It was fascinating to explore during the day, but the real magic happened after sunset when the town lit up.
The evening was spent wandering the streets, sampling local snacks and raising a cocktail to toast an incredible few days together.
Day 6: Homeward Bound
Sadly, it was time to begin the journey home.
Our final experience was travelling on China’s impressive bullet train network. Spending three hours gliding across the country felt like the perfect end to a trip that combined China’s rich history, natural beauty and modern innovation.
