When most people think of Austria, they picture snowy peaks, ski chalets and cosy winter breaks – but visit in the summer, and you’ll discover a completely different side of this beautiful country. Warm sunshine, sparkling lakes, flower-filled meadows and dramatic alpine views all combine to create a summer holiday that’s just as magical as any winter wonderland.

In June 2022, I had the chance to explore this side of Austria for myself with a trip that took me from Saalbach-Hinterglemm to Zell am See – and I’m still thinking about it! From hiking trails and mountain cable cars to crystal-clear lakes and charming villages, this was a trip packed with adventure, relaxation and a few surprises too. One of the biggest game changers? The local Resort Cards – little bits of plastic with a lot of power.

Soak Up the Sunshine

Austria in summer is stunning. The temperatures are just right – warm but never sweltering – and the long, sunny days mean you’ve got time to pack in all the exploring, relaxing, and lakeside lounging your heart desires. The scenery is picture-perfect: rolling green hills, snow-dusted peaks, and rivers so clear you’ll want to dive straight in. Whether you’re into hiking, biking, swimming, kayaking or rafting, there’s an outdoor adventure waiting around every corner.

Unlock More with Resort Cards

A huge bonus of summer travel in Austria is the Resort Card schemes. These cards, usually provided free of charge by your accommodation, unlock loads of perks – from free gondola and chairlift rides to discounts on everything from spas to e-bike hire. It’s a brilliant way to experience more without blowing the budget.

I picked up my Resort Cards on check-in and instantly started saving. They gave us access to the best the region had to offer – cable cars, museums, buses, and even a scenic train journey through the mountains. Here’s how I made the most of them…

Saalbach-Hinterglemm: Hiking Highs and Valley Views

In Saalbach-Hinterglemm, the Joker Card is your ticket to the mountains – quite literally. Available from late May to late October, it includes free access to the region’s major gondolas and lifts, including:

  • Zwölferkogelbahn – perfect for panoramic views and high-altitude hikes
  • Schattberg X-press – a scenic ride up one of the area’s most popular peaks
  • Reiterkogelbahn, Asitzbahn and Kohlmaisbahn – giving you access to miles of trails and some serious photo ops

Add to that free local bus travel, and getting around the region couldn’t be easier – ideal if, like me, you prefer not to hire a car. I actually used the bus to travel free to Zell am See for the second half of my trip.

The Joker Card also includes discounts on spa treatments, guided hikes, and e-bike hire, which is a brilliant way to explore the alpine terrain.

One of the highlights? The “End of the Valley” train (or Talschlusszug), which trundles through stunning alpine scenery all the way to the valley’s end. From there, I used my Joker Card discount to visit the Golden Gate & Treetop Trail – a 42-metre-high suspension bridge and 200-metre treetop walkway that felt like something out of a fairytale. The views were unforgettable.

Zell am See: Lakes, Lidos and Mountain Magic

The second half of my trip took me to Zell am See, where the Summer Card offers similar fantastic benefits – also available from late May to late October.

Again, free cable cars and gondolas were a huge win. My favourites included:

  • CityXpress and Schmittenhöhebahn – whisking you up for panoramic views of Lake Zell
  • Areitbahn and Maiskogel – with trails for every ability, plus chances to paraglide or toboggan
  • Kitzsteinhorn Glacier – even in summer, this snowy spot is a must-see for epic mountain views
  • Sonnenalmbahn – linking the valley with Schmittenhöhe’s hiking and biking zones

With the Summer Card, you also get free access to lakeside lidos and public pools, and discounts on boat tours and water sports. I loved my round-trip cruise on MS Schmittenhöhe, gliding across the lake surrounded by mountains and fresh alpine air – pure bliss.

You’ll also find great offers on bike hire, golf, wellness experiences, and more. There really is something for everyone.
