I wanted to share my reflections from my very first river cruise because I was genuinely blown away, especially by the food and drink on board. I’ve always enjoyed good food, but I quickly realised that if you’re a foodie, a river cruise is an absolute dream.

From the very first evening, it was clear that dining wasn’t just an add-on. It was a real part of the experience.

When the Chef Brings the Menu to Life

Each evening before dinner, the chef would give a short talk about the dishes being served. He spoke with such passion and enthusiasm that I found myself choosing things I would never normally order. Hearing about the ingredients, the inspiration behind each dish and how it was prepared made every meal feel special. He truly brought the menu to life.

Thoughtful Touches That Make a Difference

There were so many little details on board Emerald Radiance that really stood out. One moment I’ll always remember was when someone in my group ordered a Baileys. The bar team didn’t just bring the drink, they also offered the Portuguese version for her to try.

It was such a simple gesture, but incredibly thoughtful and memorable.

Even without a drinks package, complimentary wine was served with both lunch and dinner, and the team made sure glasses were always topped up. It felt generous without ever being over the top.

Cocktails, Choice and Complete Freedom

We were on the Platinum Drinks Package, which meant we could order drinks at any time of day. The cocktail list was extensive, and the bar staff were brilliant. If you had a flavour in mind or fancied something a little different, they were more than happy to create something bespoke.

It all felt very relaxed and personal, never rushed or impersonal.

Slow Mornings and Relaxed Dining

Breakfast each morning became one of my favourite moments of the day. Sitting by the window, watching the river drift past as the sun came up, set the perfect tone for what lay ahead.

Lunch was mainly buffet-style, but there were also dishes you could order fresh from the kitchen. Dinner was always three courses, sometimes more, and every plate was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. The wine selection changed nightly, and the sommelier would introduce the wines being served, which I really enjoyed.

A Sociable and Easy-Going Atmosphere

One thing that surprised me most was how relaxed and sociable dining felt. There were no set dining times and no assigned tables. Couples travelling on their own would often sit at a larger table, and others would naturally join them.

It created such a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. Everyone we met was warm, open and happy to chat, which added so much to the overall experience.

Why River Cruise Dining Truly Stands Out

From the incredible food and carefully chosen wines to the attentive staff and relaxed, social vibe on board, the whole experience exceeded my expectations. It’s easy to see why river cruising is becoming so popular, especially for those who love great food enjoyed at a slower, more thoughtful pace.
