There is something undeniably magical about cruising the River Douro during the festive season. The river takes on a calmer, more intimate feel at this time of year, and from the moment I stepped onboard Emerald Radiance, it was clear this journey would be something special. Festive touches, warm hospitality and the gentle rhythm of river life created a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere from the start.
Our first stop was the beautiful city of Porto, where Christmas markets were dotted throughout the streets. Twinkling lights reflected on the cobbled roads as the scent of mulled wine and freshly baked treats filled the air. Wandering between the stalls, it was easy to get swept up in the festive buzz, with locals and visitors alike enjoying the simple pleasures of the season. It felt unhurried and welcoming, making it a lovely way to begin the cruise.
From Porto, we continued on to Salamanca, where the festive spirit was just as vibrant. The city glowed with Christmas lights, and traditional crafts added colour and character to the streets. There was a real sense of celebration in the air, with each corner offering something new to admire. Exploring Salamanca at this time of year felt especially memorable, with its historic setting made even more enchanting by the seasonal decorations.

Back onboard, the festive experience continued in the most delightful way. Our chef truly outdid himself with an impressive chocolate sleigh, a beautiful centrepiece that showcased both creativity and attention to detail. It became a real talking point and perfectly captured the sense of Christmas onboard. Evenings were wonderfully cosy, made complete with a comforting Baileys coffee, the perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day.
This Douro river cruise was a lovely balance of exploration and relaxation, wrapped in the warmth of the festive season. It captured the spirit of Christmas in a subtle and authentic way, proving that a river cruise at this time of year can be just as magical as you imagine, if not more so.
